Drekkingarhylur, the drowning pool on the Öxará River, is where women were executed for various major infractions in Þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park, Iceland. The last such sentence was carried out in the early 1700s. Men were beheaded instead. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart here, creating a rift valley that can be explored. (© 2023 Cindi Christie/Cyanpixel)
